BOTOX

Wrinkle-relaxing injections utilise neurotoxins (ie. Botulinum toxins) to partially paralyse the movement of specific facial muscles.

As the movement decreases, this minimises the lines on the face associated with facial expression.

What is it

Wrinkle-relaxing injections utilise neurotoxins (ie. Botulinum toxins) to partially paralyse the movement of specific facial muscles.  As the movement decreases, this minimises the lines on the face associated with facial expression.

What is it for

For the purposes of improving the appearance of wrinkles, small doses of Botulinum Toxin are injected into specific facial muscles and immobilises or weakens them.

It is effective for eliminating frown lines, forehead lines and crows feet. The more experienced practitioners will also be able to offer extended use of neurotoxins – treating fine lip lines, marionette lines (line running down from corner of mouth), pebbling of the chin, or prominent muscle banding on the neck (turkey neck).

It can also be used to treat hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating in the armpits, palms or soles).

Limitations

Most patients are pleased with the results of their Botulinum Toxin injections. However, like any cosmetic procedure, there is no guarantee that you will be completely satisfied. It is not effective for deep and well-established wrinkles, and also does not improve the texture of the skin.

In some situations, it may not be possible to achieve optimal results with a single procedure. Additional procedures including dermal fillers and surgery might be required. The practice of medicine and surgery is not an exact science.  Although good results are expected, there cannot be any guarantee or warranty expressed or implied on the results that may be obtained.

The result of Botulinum Toxin injections typically last for 3-4 months, where you will notice the returning of lines together with more facial movement. Top ups should be considered before the return of full movement.

Who should NOT have it

Botulinum Toxin should not be used in

  • People who have myasthenia gravis or any other neurological disorder.

  • Pregnant or lactating women

  • Patients taking antibiotics of the aminoglycoside family (gentamicin, tobramycin)

How is it carried out

After discussing your area of concern, an assessment will be carried out by Miss Cheang, including photo documentation of your facial lines both at rest and in motion. Multiple tiny injections are then delivered to that area, using a small needle. Most people tolerate the procedure well.

Post procedure

Refrain from massaging or pressing the treated area, as this will cause the toxin to spread to nearby muscles.  Stooping and straining is also best avoided. The effect of the injection will become evident after 3-5 days.

Any undertreated area or asymmetry can be top-upped within 2 weeks.

How long do I need off work

You should be able to go back to work immediately. However if there is a particular important social function coming up, it is advisable to have the treatment 2 weeks before to achieve the best outcome.

Complications

Although the majority of patients do not experience these complications, you should make sure you understand the risk, potential complications and consequences of Botulinum Toxin injections.

Injection-related reactions occur and include: bruising, swelling, tenderness and headache. We recommend stopping aspirin or anti-inflammatory medications (ibuprofen, Advil) for 7-10 days prior to the procedure.

Other potential risks and complications of Botulinum Toxin Injection include but are not limited to: allergic reactions, abnormal facial expression, paralysis of a nearby muscles, disorientation, double vision, facial pain, asymmetrical appearance, flu-like symptoms, impaired swallowing/ speech, permanent muscle atrophy, and production of antibodies with unknown general health effects. These effects are mostly short-lived.
